In Minnesota we have...LUTEFISK. Uh, fish with LYE. Happy holidays, here's your reeking fish!
In Ohio we have what can only be described as potato mush. It's just basically all the crap you could possibly pile onto chopped potatoes and still call it a vegetable dish- sour cream, cheese, cream cheese, etc. It's gross and I hate it, but it appears at virtually all holiday gatherings.
While I no longer live in the South, I am a Texan (some people persist in calling Texans Southerners) by birth and heritage. Our regional tradition is that we must have black-eyed peas on New Year's Day.
Why? I do not know. My father had to top them with chopped tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and hot sauce. Mr. Pi and I just have the black eyed peas.
The reason you eat black-eyed peas is for luck in the coming year! We do this, too!
And we also must eat greens (we either do spinach or here in the deep south (GA), collards, ick) for money!
